Young fulltime RVers: They're out there!

Most fulltime RVers are in their 60s or older. Most are finished with their careers, have money in the bank, and have decided that living in a home that can change location is more stimulating than living in one that stays put all the time. But what about the younger full-timers? Yes, they are out there -- not in big numbers, but their ranks are growing. In this two-minute video, fulltime RVer Evanne Schumarder reflects on "starting young" and asks other young fulltimers to get in touch.

My husand & I will be retiring next year, and both be 52. This really does encourage us to go through with our RV Life Style! We have talked to many People(older than ourselves) but it's good knowing there are other's out there our own age.

We've been fulltiming since February when we moved out of our apartment and into our RV - in reality, we are just taking a really long trip, because we will have to find jobs soon since we did not take careers on the road or work camp. But we'd love to get back to fulltiming soon - maybe after working a while longer and/or figuring out how to make money from the road, and more importantly, how to take care of ourselves in retirement and medical insurance. Health insurance has been our largest expense, and most useless, since our provider only allows emergency care away from "home." We love this lifestyle and are sad to be leaving it temporarily (we hope)! We are in our 40's, and can relate to much of what you said - thanks!

I have been a fulltime rv'er since I was 38. I laughed when I heard you say you've never looked back because that is what I say all the time when telling our story. I was diagnosed with MS when I was 36 which morphed my thinking and was the catalyst for such a huge lifestyle change.

We are spending the first three weeks of October in Osoyoos BC then heading through Utah for 4.5 months in Arizona! Back on Vancouver Island mid March/08.

Its nice to know we're not alone out there! Happy travels!

We've been on the road four years now and around this beautiful country three times.
Our business is computer education for travelers.
We love to scuba dive and kayak.
Those activities are often considered young folks things. In the RV world, we are the "young folks"
It's fun. We're GeeksOnTour.com.

How refreshing it is to hear about what awaits my husband and I. We're both in our mid 50s and Nov 07 or Jan 08 we'll be hitting the road fulltime. In 2005 we purchased our retirement home on wheels, remodeled the rooms to fit our lifestyle. We have our dingy outfitted with bicycles & port-a-boat...add the 2 toy poodles + bird and we're on our way. We can't wait after 26 years of planning our lifestyle to finally be doing it! We've been to all 50 states and all of Canada except Labradore & New Foundland. We expect to see those and the rest of it all over again and again. And we can't wait to make new friendships all along the way.

I am trying to adjust to very suddenly having to go fulltime. I have been travelling all summer, and came home to find that my state, where I'd had many plans over the winter, has passed a law making health insurance mandatory. When I became sick a few years ago my insurance was cancelled and I cannot get new insurance as I now have a "preexisting condition". So I guess I'll head south looking for a great new residence! Tough wrapping my mind around it, as I was not planning to retire--I am 54. This will be hardest on my mother, who is counting on my help more and more.

Hehe,,,,,,, I am 64, but still can not figure if that is old. I am more active than ever. My wife and I bought a truck and truck camper early this summer, and have been on the road 2 days out of every week since. Would like to figure a way to make it full time, but with my expensive interests....I need a darn good on the road income. One of those interests is to pilot my own motorized sailplane on a regular basis. Of course, I would pull it in a trailer behind the RV when not flying it. I am great at writing and photography, so hmmmmm. Thanks so much for your inspiration on the subject. Any ideas you readers might have for breaking free via using the RV as more than just the usual retirement mecca?

I am 41 years old and my husband is 46. We are tired of the daily grind of full time careers, maintaining and paying for the costs of a home, and endless chores associated with full time work and home ownership.

Since we both love to travel, we have been researching and exploring the idea of full timing in an rv.

What are your suggestions?
Thanks so much.

My husband and I retired at 54 & 49, and 18 months ago, we sold our home, bought a class A MH and hit the road. He decided to start his own business and now works 5-6 months in the summers in the midwest and we travel and spend the winter months in the southern states. WE LOVE IT!We have never been happier. The other RV'ers we meet are so friendly, we miss them when they leave. My husbands family thought we were crazy to buy a MH and hit the road, but our children were thrilled for us. I do think it takes a special type of person to fulltime. You have to leave a lot of material things behind. I don't miss the extra baggage at all.

I've got you all beat. Just turned 23 and kickin-it full time in my Jayco. Started in in Cali, then quit my job and I'm considering moving to Fort Collins, CO to be around some young people.

Five years ago, I decided I needed a major change in my life so I took a sabbatical leave, I sold my house and car, stored or sold most of my furniture, bought an RV online from a reputable RV dealer in Amsterdam (NL), and alone with my two cats, embarked on the best 13-month adventure of my life at age 38. I traveled over 30,000 KM in 28 different countries in Europe, a different but equally great RVing stomping grounds.

Unfortunately, at the time, it didn't occur to me that I could actually earn a full-time living while embracing the full-time RV lifestyle so after running out of money, I had to sell my RV and come back home (to Canada). And I've been looking for a way, ever since, to get back on the road RVing again.

Unfortunately, since my return, the economy has been wreaking havoc and as a result, I am, once again, jobless and penniless, living on employment insurance. Obviously, no money to buy an RV, let alone operate it. But I'm working at developing a freelance career that, when it takes off, will enable me to return to full-time RVing and the location-independent lifestyle it affords.

Happy travels!
